House League Grades 1-5

1st Grade League

The 1st grade house league is designed to introduce the kids to the game of basketball, with an emphasis on teaching fundamental skills and team play. Having fun and exhibiting good sportsmanship are always the priorities. The season runs October 28 - February 17.

League Coordinator: David Unger, housedirector@wayzatabasketball.org

Season:  All 1st grade practices will be held on Saturdays.  Practice times will vary each week. There is NO season-ending tournament in 1st grade.

Practices:   Practices will consist of 45-55 min practices once a week. The first part of the season the focus will be on developing individual basketball skills and building team skills. The second part of the season will consist of drills and introduction to 3 on 3.

Games: There will be no 5 on 5 games, just 3 on 3 games within the team or the other team that will be practicing the same time.

Coaches: House basketball does rely on volunteers for coaching. Please consider coaching and indicate it during registration if interested. At the beginning of the year coaches will be given examples of practice plans, as well as some drills they can use to help the kids develop their skills, along with being invited to a coaching clinic hosted by the boys varsity coach, Bryan Schnettler.

Team Formation:  The 1st grade league does not have player evaluations and children are grouped by school when possible.  Players from elementary schools without sufficient coaches will be split up if necessary and added to teams from other schools that have sufficient coaches.  Coaches and teams will be formed by October 15 with practices scheduled to start October 28.  We do not take play-with requests.

Uniform:
All players will receive a reversible jersey.

Basketball: 1st graders will be playing with a 27.5 inch basketball.

Season: Week of October 23 - February 17.  There is NO Season-ending tournament in 2nd grade.

Team Formation: There are no player evaluations for 2nd grade.  Teams are grouped by school as much as possible and will be handled on a first come first serve basis, per registration submissions.  Kids from elementary schools with insufficient coach volunteers are likely to be split up to fill open spots on other elementary school teams that had sufficient coach volunteers.  Coaches and teams will be formed and notified of their rosters by Saturday, October 15, with practices scheduled to start the week of October 23 for 2nd grade.  Please see each grade's page for more details about the league, rules, etc.

Participation

The number of teams in each grade level will be determined by the number of players who register (paid registration). The house league provides a roster spot (assuming sufficient coach volunteers) for all registered players attending a school within the Wayzata School District.

All WBBA teams and programs are organized based on grade levels. Our policy is that players must participate at their grade level. "Playing up" is not permitted without advance approval of the WBBA Board of Directors. Exceptions to this rule will be rare.

Violations to this policy may result in dismissal from the program without refund.

Play-with Requests

The only play-with requests that will be considered for the 2023-2024 will be with coaches and their sons, and sibling sets within a grade. No other play-with requests will be considered.

Coaching

If you or someone you know is interested in coaching, please indicate it during the registration process. The WBBA is dependent on head/assistant coaches, as well as team parents, to make the season a success. Please don't hesitate to apply. Assistance in structuring your season and practice plans will be offered if requested.
