RISING STARS HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE (RSHSL) OVERVIEW

The RSHSL is a new program giving boys in grades 9-12 who have previously played High School or Travel basketball an option to play even more competitive basketball than what is currently offered through the existing WBBA Southwest 9-12 program. The RSHSL is hosted by the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS).

This is not a recreational league. Per the MYAS guidelines, eligible players must have tried out for the Wayzata High School basketball team and/or previously played at the Travel level. Players not meeting the minimum requirements are not eligible for consideration.

The WBBA will create and provide intact Wayzata teams to compete against other communities or RSHSL teams formed by the MYAS comprised of different communities. The number of WBBA teams is determined by the number of qualified registrants. The RSHSL has three class levels:

  • Freshman (Grade 9)
  • Sophomore (Grade 10)
  • Upperclassmen (Grades 11-12)

All registrants may not be selected to play in the RSHSL, yet will still have the option of participating in the SW 9-12 program. The criteria considered to determine Rising Stars team placement includes the following:

- Did the player play for a high school team last year?
- Did the player try out for the high school team this year?
- Did the player play travel basketball in 7th or 8th grade?
- If they played in SW last year, what was the coach's feedback?
- Other pertinent details the RSHSL committee had available.

Practices are held at Wayzata facilities with games played across the metro area. Specific locations are determined after teams are formed and schedules set. League games are double-headers played on Sundays. There will also be an end-of-season single-elimination playoff and the opportunity to play in up to three other tournaments including the MYAS Rec State Tournament. Total games will be 20-25. Players are provided a Wayzata jersey and shorts that they may keep.

RSHSL Registration Fee - $400 per player

RSHSL LEAGUE INFORMATION

Number of Teams, Players per Team, and Team Makeup:

The number of teams in each class level is determined by the number of players who register and meet the eligibility requirements. Space may be limited, and therefore the number of teams and players is limited. Teams will be made up of 9-10 players. Players will be placed on teams based on skill/experience level, height, etc. to create teams that are competitive in the class level we put each team in. The criteria considered to determine Rising Stars team placement also includes the following:

- Did the player play for a high school team last year?
- Did the player try out for the high school team this year?
- Did the player play travel basketball in 7th or 8th grade?
- If they played in SW last year, what was the coach's feedback?
- Other pertinent details the RSHSL committee had available.

Playing Time:

The WBBA has established the playing time policy for all RSHSL program players to be an average minimum of 40% per game. The 40% playing time policy may vary depending on a player's attendance at practices and/or games, attentiveness during practice, and/or disciplinary issues.

Player Commitment:

Players are expected to attend all practices and games. Parents should make every effort to ensure this. The WBBA understands that occasional conflicts may arise due to religious, educational, health, or family matters. Players and Parents, please consider this commitment when signing up. A paid registration is required prior to participation in any practices or games – no pay, no play.

Coach Selection:

WBBA RSHSL coaches are volunteers (usually parents) giving of their time and energy. The WBBA provides an equal opportunity to anyone who would like to coach a team. A good understanding of basketball plus good organizational, leadership, and communication skills are needed. If you are interested in volunteering to be a Coach, please indicate your interest on the registration form. Teams typically have a head coach and an assistant coach (or co-coach). A criminal background check will be required of all head and assistant coaches prior to participation in practices/games.

Practices:

Practices are expected to start the week after teams are formed. RSHSL teams will get two practices per week at Wayzata facilities.  Players will need to bring their own basketballs.

Games and Playoffs:

The 2023-24 schedule will be posted on the MYAS website. All regular season games and playoffs will be played across the metro area at the National Sports Center in Blaine, the Hastings YMCA, the Ridgedale YMCA in Minnetonka, West Lutheran H.S. in Plymouth, etc.

All league games are held on Sundays. Teams will play two league games on each game day for a total of 12 regular season games. Teams will be seeded, based on regular season results, and placed into a single-elimination RSHSBL playoff bracket at the end of the season.

Games will be 22-minute running time per half for all class levels, but the Upperclassmen level will play with a 35-second shot clock.  All games will be televised through www.myas.tv.
