SW 9-12 LEAGUE INFORMATION

Number of Teams, Players per Team, and Team Makeup:

The number of teams in each grade level will be determined by the number of players who register (paid registration). Space may be limited, and therefore the number of teams limited, based upon the determination of the WBBA 9-12 Director. Each team will have between 8 and 11 players.

Playing Time:

This is an equal playing time league enforced by league rules and the use of “equal play scoresheets” at all games. However, playing time may be reduced for a player based upon attendance at practices and/or games, attentiveness during practice, and/or disciplinary issues.

Player Commitment:

Players are expected to attend all practices and games. Parents should make every effort to ensure this. The WBBA understands that occasional conflicts may arise due to religious, educational, health, family matters, or other sports activities. Players and Parents, please consider this commitment when signing up. A paid registration is required prior to participation in any practices or games.

Player Evaluations:

There are no evaluations or tryouts for SW 9-12. Teams are formed via a serpentine draft by the coaches. Players past basketball experience such as previous High School or Travel participation and # years of SW or organized basketball is a basis for skill level consideration. The only guaranteed play-with requests that will be considered will be with the coaches and their sons, and sibling sets within a grade.

Practices:

Practices will begin in December. There is generally one practice per week. Possibility of teams sharing gyms if lack of available court time dictates. Practices generally last between 75 and 90 minutes each, and may occur any night Monday through Friday. Players who cannot attend a practice due to a conflict are expected to email, text, or call their coach in advance. Practice schedules will be communicated by coaches and posted on the WBBA website.

Games: SW 9-12 Game Locations/Venues

Teams will generally play one regular league game on every Sunday starting in January through the beginning of March. Games will be home or away. Away games involve travel to other communities participating in the league (e.g. Hopkins, Edina, Minnetonka, etc.). Players should arrive to games 15-30 minutes prior based upon the preference of the coach. Players who cannot attend a game due to a conflict are expected to communicate to their coach at least 2 days in advance so the coach has time to adjust the player rotation for that weekend. League game schedules and rules will be posted on the WBBA website prior to the start of games. Teams will also be scheduled to play in some preseason scrimmages (Wayzata vs. Wayzata) on Sundays in December.

End of Season League Tournament:

Tournament Link: https://myasrp.com/pages/event/detail/1294129772

An end of season tournament is typically held at the Wayzata High School on the 2nd weekend in March and teams will have games on both Saturday and Sunday that weekend. There may be more than one bracket per grade level (e.g. 9A and 9B divisions) due to the number of teams and based upon team records.

Coach Selection:

WBBA SW 9-12 coaches are volunteers (usually parents) giving of their time and energy. The WBBA provides an equal opportunity to anyone who would like to coach a team. A good understanding of basketball plus good organizational, leadership, and communication skills are needed. If you are interested in volunteering to be a Coach, please indicate your interest on the registration form. Teams typically have a head coach and one assistant coach (or co-coach). A criminal background check is required of all head and assistant coaches prior to participation in practices/games.
